The botanical name for Basil is Ocimum Basilicum. The essential oil is extracted through steam distillation of the plant's leaves and flowering tops. This essential oil is popularly employed in aromatherapy owing to its unique greenish-yellow color and crisp, refreshing aroma. It is believed to stimulate the mind, alleviate stress, and enhance concentration. Basil has its origins in tropical Asia and the Pacific Islands, but it is currently cultivated all over Europe and the USA.
Basil oil is deemed therapeutic for respiratory tract ailments such as asthma, sinusitis, and bronchitis. It has been known to alleviate nervous disorders and stress-related headaches and migraines. Moreover, it is believed to alleviate constipation, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, menstrual issues, and uric-acid accumulation in the blood leading to gout. This essential oil is considered effective in treating arthritis and insect bites while refreshing the skin. However, experts advise expectant women and children under 16 to avoid using it.
Basil herb is very popular in India and has been used in prayer and for healing purposes for several centuries. Its leaves are frequently chewed during prayer ceremonies and are soaked in coconut water or holy water to sprinkle in temples after prayers. Additionally, the leaves are chewed to alleviate sore throats and coughs. Tulasi (basil) leaf decoction is drunk to relieve painful throats and respiratory problems.
